ECE PhD students among top researchers invited to 2021 MIT EECS Rising Stars workshop


Illinois ECE doctoral researchers Mei-Yun Lin, Srilakshmi Pattabiraman, and Yamuna Phal were among the 89 invited young women engineers and computer scientists worldwide who participated in the MIT EECS Rising Stars 2021 academic workshop held virtually October 14-15.

For its ninth year, Rising Stars provided graduate students and post-docs with historically marginalized or underrepresented genders with opportunities for mentoring and practical information they need to launch and sustain a successful academic career in electrical engineering, computer science, and artificial intelligence and decision-making.

Phal represents UIUC at 2021 MIT EECS Rising Stars workshop


Yamuna Phal presented “Emerging Techniques in Infrared Imaging” at the 2021 MIT EECS Rising Stars Workshop designed to recognize and empower students with underrepresented gender identities in the STEM fields. Her research, “encompasses a fundamental information theory approach that pushes the spatial and spectral limits of IR microscopy”. This workshop helps highlight the work of historically marginalized and underrepresented genders in the electrical engineering and computer science fields.

Phal’s research in Beckman’s Computational Imaging Group advances infrared imaging technology for better, faster disease diagnosis. Her presentation, titled “Emerging Techniques in Infrared Imaging,” expounded on this groundbreaking work.
